We’re delighted to welcome Bryony Angell to the Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland (SPF) team as our new Outreach and Event Coordinator.
A resident of La Conner for the past five years, Bryony brings with her a lifelong relationship with Skagit Valley. From her earliest years, she visited the region often with her parents, especially during winter birding trips—experiences that shaped her appreciation for this place. Moving to Skagit County was, in her own words, a dream come true.
“Skagit Valley has been a beloved landscape to me, long before I ever lived here,” Bryony said. “To now be working on behalf of the land, the farmers, and the community that make this place so special is an incredible honor.”
Bryony is a lifelong birder and a nationally recognized writer on birding culture, particularly the role of women in the field. You may already know her work—she’s the author behind our Be Bird Wise blog, an outreach initiative focused on respectful birdwatching in the working agricultural landscape.
Professionally, Bryony has over 25 years of experience volunteering with nonprofits and recently wrapped up a 19-year career as a project coordinator in the healthcare industry. Her work focuses on helping people make informed choices that support healthy food systems, sustainable travel, and biodiversity. She’s a published contributor to outlets such as Audubon.org, Bird Watcher’s Digest, the American Birding Association’s Birding Magazine, and The Seattle Times.
Bryony’s connection to Be Bird Wise goes beyond writing. As a volunteer and speaker with the coalition, she has presented across western Washington on the value of farmland to both birds and people. She participated in La Conner’s Ag Day with Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland, teaching kids about the agricultural landscape and respectful birding.
“Bryony’s enthusiasm is infectious. Her love for this region shines through in everything she does,” said SPF Executive Director Lora Claus. “Bryony’s gift for connecting with people from all walks of life is exactly what we need to communicate the vital importance of Skagit Valley agriculture to a broad audience. Through storytelling, education, and community engagement, she brings our mission to life. We’re delighted to have her on the team.”
In her new role, Bryony will lead key SPF programs such as Youth InFARMation and Talking Fields, engaging students and the broader community in the story of local agriculture. She will also coordinate major events, including the upcoming Our Valley Our Future breakfast and the Harvest Dinner, all in support of SPF’s mission to ensure the long-term economic viability of agriculture in Skagit County.
A proud La Conner Braves mom to two school-age children—Vireo and Vesper (yes, both named after birds!)—Bryony counts farmers, small business owners, trail runners, sailors, birders, and other parents among her close-knit community.
Please join us in giving her a warm welcome—we’re excited to have her energy, experience, and voice supporting agriculture in the Skagit Valley!
